Last season, Parisians were treated to a moving Norma by Cecilia Bartoli. This season, we are delighted to welcome her back for Alcina. This wonderful character of a betrayed sorceress, composed by Handel in 1735, is tailor-made for the vocal calibre and personality of the Roman mezzo. Not only will she perform in a stage production of a Handel opera, but she will also be accompanied for the occasion by Philippe Jaroussky as Ruggiero, making this a very special event. This duet will perform wonderfully well together in this romantic drama. German playwright Christof Loy, who has an excellent eye for glamour and devilry alike, offers an ambitious reading of the work which brings together the requisite emotion, magic and betrayal, with the occasional shaft of humour. Emmanuelle Haïm and the Concert d’Astrée will be in the orchestra pit and their familiarity with Handel is certain to provide the grandeur and expressiveness intended by the composer.
